Teschemakers was originally a part of William Teschemaker’s estate, who was an English gentleman of Dutch descent. (Teschemakers is old Dutch for table maker!) In 1862, the homestead was built of Oamaru stone and surrounded by lawns of English trees. Patrick and Peter McCarthy bought the property in 1905, but gifted it to the Dominican Congregation of Sisters. In 1912, the grand opening of St Patrick’s School was celebrated. Over the years, the college grew until it could cater for 140 girls, and became a centre-piece of the community. The Sisters decided to close the school in 1977. But to this day, the old classrooms and dormitories remain. From 1980, Teschemakers was run by the Sisters as a retreat and conference centre. Today, Teschemakers Resort offers elegant accommodation and breathtaking settings for intimate ceremonies through to grand celebrations Our rooms are newly refurbished, giving you all of the modern conveniences.
